After more than twenty seven years in the ministry, I am keenly aware of the complexity of balancing ministry with enthusiasm. You’re not only charged with, but expected to bring timely, relevant messages. Not so deep that the children can't grasp it, yet not so shallow that your most learned student of the Bible will leave wanting. You are expected to know and meet everyone’s needs, all the time and without excuse. This is, of course, humanly impossible. But thanks be to God, He somehow supernaturally manages to meet the audience’s needs, when they need it.
One way He does this is by giving us tools to work with. Of course, the greatest tool of all time is the Bible. Other tools we use are; revivals, Bible schools, youth camps and homecomings. All of these events give the congregation an opportunity to invite family and friends that would not typically come to church. With this in mind, why not have a “Western Day” at your church?
Who doesn’t like to watch an old western movie from time to time? There’s just something about the cowboy days that intrigues us. I can’t give the stats for every state, but I’m from Texas and I do know our demographics. Only a little over seventeen percent of Texans live in rural areas. That leaves almost eighty three percent of Texans who rarely get to see the cowboy culture in the flesh. Apart from Oklahoma and several of our western states, I’m sure the ratio is higher in the remainder of the country.
Call it Western Day, Old Fashion Day or Round Up Sunday. Whatever you and your staff decide, it’s an opportunity to inject something different in the mix. Have your people dress western or old fashion. Let them hear some positive Christian music with a country flavor. Then have an appropriate message tailored to the theme you’ve chosen.
To find a date that will work for your schedule, or if you would like more information: To my Cowboy Church friends, it's a lifestyle for us, but for many churches, it might be just what God will use to get someone under the sound of the gospel.
